2010 BCS National Championship Preview

So after 2 weeks of the intense 8-team playoff, it's come down to the last two undefeated teams in the nation. Oh wait......just kidding.....

Anywho,

#1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. #2 Texas Longhorns

The Stats:
Alabama: 197.9 Passing Yards/Game
Texas: 279.7 Passing Yards/Game
Alabama: 215.8 Rushing Yards/Game
Texas: 152.7 Rushing Yards/Game
Alabama: 163.8 Passing Yards Allowed/Game, 9 TDs allowed
Texas: 188.9 Passing Yards Allowed/Game, 14 TDs allowed
Alabama: 78.1 Rushing Yards Allowed/Game (2nd fewest in nation), 5 TDs allowed
Texas: 62.9 Rushing Yards Allowed/Game (fewest in nation), 5 TDs allowed

Here it is, the big matchup. "Hey! Texas is gonna get romped just like Florida!" Sure, that might make sense to you if you're a toothless hillbilly (Hey buddy! I'm a Bama fan! [Jim Gaffigan impression]) Yes, at first look, it does appear that Bama will crush Texas, especially when you think back to what they did to my beloved Gators :(

But not so fast folks. Let's take a good, honest look at these two teams and come to a more educated guess as to who will win this game.

First off, the McQuarterbacks. Heisman finalist Colt McCoy led the nation in completion percentage at 70.5%. Along with this, he had 3512 yards, 27 TDs and threw 12 INTs. He also had the most carries on his team with 128 for 348 yards and 3 TDs. However, he was also sacked 30 times this year, in a conference where defense (outside of Ndamukong Suh) is lacking quite a bit. On the other side of the field lies Greg McElroy with his 61.1% completion percentage, 2450 yards, 17 TDs and 4 INTs. He also rushed 47 times for 110 yards and 1 TD and was only sacked 14 times. He had the game of his life against Florida in the SEC Championship game in which he went 12 for 18 passing for 239 yards and a TD.
Better QB: Texas.

Now the ground game. Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram leads the team with 249 carries for 1542 yards and 15 TDs. He was also the 3rd leading receiver on the team with 30 receptions for 322 yards and 3 TDs. Their other RB is Trent Richardson who carried the ball 126 times for 642 yards and 6 TDs. Along with this, he also had solid production as a receiver with 14 receptions for 107 yards. The fact that both of these RBs have quite a few receptions (especially Ingram leading the team) shows that McElroy uses them as a primary option if his receivers aren't open. Bama also had two other RBs with 40+ carries a piece who combined for 456 yards and 5 TDs.
Texas' running game isn't anything to laugh at. They bring 2 solid runners with Tre Newton and Cody Johnson. Newton racked up 513 yards and 6 TDs on 102 rushes while Johnson carried the ball 84 times for 333 yards and 12 TDs. They had two other RBs who combined for 108 carries, 507 yards and 6 TDs. None of these RBs had many receptions, however.
Better RBs: Bama

The receiving corps: Jordan Shipley is the top dog in this category. He had the 4th most receptions in the nation (106) and the 5th most yards (1363). Texas had 5 other receivers with 25+ receptions, 3 of which had 400+ yards and all combined for 16 TDs.
Alabama

To be finished in a few mins.....

  1. SO yeah, I didn't get this post finished. I had to pick up a pizza and when I got back, the game had started. Doesn't matter, we all know I was going to predict that Colt McCoy was going to get hurt on his first possession....
