Early thoughts from College Basketball today

IU started hot against Kentucky and played pretty well overall, but Kentucky just has a lot more talent and is in a little bit better shape. However much it pains me to admit it, Crean will have IU competing like Kentucky is currently, eventually. The problem I had with watching the game was the point when the IU students began chanting "Cal's a cheater" in reference to Coach Calipari's frequent NCAA investigations (which I've already even mentioned). But, dear IU fans, let's not forget who was your coach not too long ago.

As for the OSU vs. That team Thad Matta used to coach for before he got big dollar bill signs for eyes: Good for Butler! They played hard, they had to play with Howard in foul trouble, and they had to play a team who has athletes that are probably a little better than theirs, but just like there's some magic in Mackey Arena, there's certainly plenty of Indiana Basketball Magic in Hinkle Fieldhouse. OSU played well considering they were missing Evan Turner (the points machine), but my main problem was that David Lighty, by far the best ballhandler with Turner out, wasn't always the guy running the plays. Sometimes it was P.J. Hill. Don't even get me started on P.J. Hill... (think about one of those wind-up toys that just bounces around a lot, add some dreadlocks, and that's how he plays defense. I think he expends more energy on defense trying to move as much of his body as possible at once than actually defending his man.)

An interesting point was raised by my roommate: which Big Ten(11) team will hire Brad Stevens? The only possibilities we could come up with were Iowa, PSU, and maybe Northwestern. But all three coaches at those schools would have to take a serious snooze-fest to get on their respective program's bad sides.

Currently watching the Army/Navy game. What good football. If you're not watching, why? It's two teams that play hard, disciplined, team-oriented football, and you get to see a glimpse of how football looked to your grandfather with the triple-option wishbone. And, I guess the final answer as to why you should be watching is that not to watch might be un-American and then Betsy Ross's great-great-great-granddaughter will cry... and you don't want that.

Should be a good ballgame down at the University of Alabama this evening, if you're looking for things to do around 9 pm after you've watched (hopefully) Toby Gerhart accept the Heisman.

  1. Agree with you on most of this. I only woke up in time to watch the second half of the Butler game and the IU game was well out of hand at that point. I was going to ask you if I should cheer for IU (BigTen, Kentucky is ranked higher than us) or Kentucky(it would be another loss for IU). Where you mentioned Lickliter though, isn't he on the hotseat? That team is terrible and it's his third year. I haven't really paid much attention to them so I guess I don't know what the true story is. I just know they're bad. However, I don't know if Iowa would be too keen on hiring Stevens as they may assume that he would simply be Lickliter part 2.

  2. Well, clearly Stevens can recruit, where as Lickliter maybe not so much.

I always root against IU. Though with my current bandwagon fandom of John Wall, I had more than usual reason to back the 'Cats.
